The Race at the Old County Fair
«Steve Dickson »
Horses came
from near and far
On that fine and sunny day
Rich and poor men brought ‘em out
On that afternoon in May
Paints and
Arabs, Appys too
Many other breeds were there
Racin’ for the braggin’ rights
At the local county fair
Banker
brought his thoroughbred
They all said that horse was fast
Ran him at the Derby once
But he came in next to last
One feller
brought a donkey
Another rode on a mule
They were banned from the big race
So they had a private duel
Nine horses
stood at the line
But then just before the shot
Feller ran up out of breath
Said ‘look here what I done brought’
He opened up
his trailer
Rode on over to the rest
On a ugly swayback beast
The line judge said sir you jest
The horse
looked just plumb awful
Had a humpy roman nose
One ear was gone completely
And a rank aroma rose
He walked up
to the others
They sure didn’t want him there
Fussin’ and a fidgetin’
With noses up in the air
The shot
rang out, they were gone
A runnin’ down the dirt track
The thoroughbred was leadin’
the rest of the motley pack
The race was
going his way
Then the crowd was filled with ire
As the plug was gainin’ ground
Runnin’ like his butt’s afire
History was
made that day
Many lost a lot of cash
Most bet on the thoroughbred
He sure didn’t win that dash
No other
horse was faster
When once they got him started
Nine horses would not beat him
None could outrun Hoof Hearted
